TWELVE

Fiona

I was completely distracted as I worked on cleaning Jackson’s bathroom. He’d been so adamant on it being cleaned that I expected it to look like a bomb had gone off inside. But it was practically perfect.

Besides a few water spots on the faucet and a bit of grime around the toilet, the bathroom was clean. It made me wonder why he’d wanted to hire a housekeeper. He wasn’t a particularly dirty person.

Add that confusion to my worry about Blake, and I was a hot mess.

When I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror, I audibly gasped. My hair had fallen out of its bun, and the combination of sweat and humidity had turned it into a mess of curly flyaways. I looked like a mad scientist.

I rinsed my hands quickly and took a moment to fix my hair. I wasn’t trying to be attractive for Jackson or anything—I just didn’t want to look like a dead-tired mommy.

I wanted to feel alive.

With my hair done, I worked to finish the bathroom. Once the surfaces were sparkling, I gathered the cleaning supplies and turned off the light. I deposited the supplies in the hall closet and slipped past Jackson’s bedroom. It was just as clean as it had been yesterday.

The bed was made—with the corners tucked in military style. It was almost as if he hadn’t slept on it. Without thinking, I moved closer to the bed. When I got there, I reached down and brushed my fingertips across his comforter. The fabric was soft and smooth.

Did he sleep here or the couch? He seemed to spend the majority of his time on the couch. If that was the case, why didn’t he sleep in his bed?

Why was he even here?

“What are you doing?”

Jackson’s voice startled me. I gasped and turned, yanking my hand away from the bed. My brain reeled as I tried to think of an excuse. A reason why I was standing here, fondling his comforter.

“I was—I mean, I am—.” I cleared my throat. “I finished cleaning the bathroom.”

His gaze drifted from me, over to the bathroom door, and then back to me. “So what are you doing to my bed?”

I clasped the hand that had been touching the comforter. Heat permeated my body as I melted under his scrutiny. “I was just…” How could I say this without making me sound like a psycho? Realizing there was no way to do that, I decided to go with the truth. “Your bed was made like this last night when I was here.”

He furrowed his brow. “And?”

I blew out my breath. “And I was wondering if you even sleep here.”

There, I said it. Ugh, when had I turned into this loser?

Jackson was quiet for a moment before his lips tipped up into a smile. It was both strange and unsettling. Was this the kind of smile that a killer had right before they murdered their victim?

“You’ve been picturing me sleeping?” His words were marked with a laugh. It was low and throaty and…sexy.
